SEPTEMBER 1960 - THE CLOSING OF DELORO SMELTING AND REFINING CO. LTD
/In March of 1961 the plant was fully closed down following a tapering off process, and by Nov. 1962, about 25 men were working on demolition and clean-up operations. What they did not know was how major the clean-up operation would be, lasting until 2017, with a continuing monitoring program
In 1960, Mr. J.N. Cram, manager of the Deloro Smelting and Refining Co. Ltd., predicted the closing of the company due to tumbling world prices. Earlier in the year, employees were reduced to 150, from the wartime peak of 900. ”In 1957 we were employing about 300 people and the price of cobalt was $2.60 a pound”, he said. “Today the price is down to $1.50 a pound and Canada is priced out the market.”
