Our story begins in 1864 when James Crawford, born 1837 in Marmora, left home to travel to the Pacific Northwest.

Margaret Crawford Shannon 1829-1890

Margaret married Daniel Shannon and went on to have seven children:

  • Elizabeth Anne “Anna” Shannon Elliott 1855-1936 daughter of Daniel Shannon 1825-1895 and Margaret Crawford Shannon 1829-1890. Anna was the niece who traveled to Seattle to care for her uncle, James Crawford 1837-1883 who had contracted tuberculosis. She married Salvador Elliott 1852-1900 and had two sons, Daniel Carroll Elliott 1892-1908 and Eugene Crawford Elliott 1894-1941.

  • Patrick Crawford Shannon 1853 Marmora, Patrick and his wife, Mary Ellen Dempsey who was born in Belleville in 1858 had two daughters and two sons. Anna Leah was born in Marmora in 1887.She died tragically at the age of 14 in Seattle. Joseph Eugene was born in Marmora in 1889, had two sons and died in 2014 in Seattle.  Donald James was born in Marmora in 1891. He never had children and died in Los Angeles in 1935. Madeleine Sarah was born in Seattle in 1896 and died in Seattle in 1963. (See below)

  • Dr. William Alexander Shannon born in Marmora in 1857 and died in Seattle in 1924 was an early physician in Seattle.

James Crawford Shannon 1859-1926

  • Dr. James Crawford Shannon was born in Marmora in 1859 and died in Seattle in 1926. He was a physician.

JAMES CRAWFORD

James Crawford 1837-1883 was the son of Hugh Crawford 1797 Saintfield, Co Down Ireland to 1881 Hastings Co & Eliza Jane Hughes 1808 Downpatrick, Down Co, Ireland to 1889 in Marmora. He was the first of the family to emigrate to the Pacific Northwest. His two nieces and three nephews soon followed.


  • Daniel Shannon 1870-1959 married Sarah Donahue (see above right) and went on to have four children:- James Laughlin Shannon, William Shannon, Tom Shannon and Marion Paquet

  • Frances “Fannie” Catherine Shannon 1861-1923 daughter of Daniel Shannon 1825-1895 and Margaret Crawford 1829-1890. Fannie is on the far right with two unknown women. Fannie never married

  • Mary Elizabeth Shannon Dempsey

    Mary Elizabeth Shannon 1867-1899. married John W. Dempsey 1860-1934 John was the son of Michael Dempsey 1819-1881 & Sarah Elizabeth McGee Dempsey 1832-1920. Mary Elizabeth Shannon was the daughter of Daniel Shannon 1825-1895 & Margaret Crawford 1829-1890. John & Elizabeth Shannon Dempsey were the parents of Charles Albert Dempsey 1898-1899. Elizabeth died just two months before her 11month-old son

His brother was Laughlin Crawford

Laughlin Crawford married a Donahue, whose brother was John Donahue.

John was married to Theresa Mulroney and had a daughter, Sarah Mary Donohue.

Sarah Mary Donahue was raised by Laughlin Crawford and married Daniel Shannon, the son of Margaret Crawford and Daniel Shannon

Sarah Donahue and Daniel Shannon went on to have four children:-

John W. Dempsey 1860-1934 son of Michael Dempsey 1819-1881 and Sarah Elizabeth McGee Dempsey 1832-1920. He was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Shannon 1867-1899 and the father of Charles Albert Dempsey 1898-1899. His second wife was Edith Agatha Johns 1878-1960 and their daughter was Mary Isabelle Dempsey Morrissey 1909-1997 John was a councillor on the first council of the Village of Marmora in 1901. He and his second wife, lived at 22 Forsyth (Cook’s Barber) and in 1909 moved to Seattle
