wALTER dEACON AND HIS WIFE, MaRY JANE CHRISTIE . Celia Murray writes: this is Walter Deacon, my grandfather's brother, (1851-1940) and Mary Jane Christie (1860-1933) parents of Annie, Minnie, Violet, Charlotte and Olive. Walter was born in Marmora .... his father was born in Devonshire England. (This was my English Methodist side...some of the Irish Catholic side came from Wexford). Walter's great grand daughter is Elaine Callan (Lakeshore Rd).

Celebrated 88th Birthday

Mr. Walter Deacon, oldest resident of Marmora, celebrated his 88th birthday last Thursday by motoring to Belleville, to have his bii'thday dinner at- the home of his daughter, Mrs. G. B. Airhart. Mr. Deacon, who enjoys fairly good health for his advanced years, was born on a farm a couple of miles north of Marmora village. For much of his life he engaged in lumbering and was a teamster for the Rathbun Co. and later for the Pearce Co. when those firms carried on lumbering on a large scale. He resides with his daughter, Miss Violet Deacon, in the residence on McGill street which he erected quite a number of years ago. His wife, Mary Jane Christie, to whom he was married in 1883, passed away several-years ago. Three daughters passed' away in their youth. Surviving members- of the family, are Mrs. 0.. B. Airhart, Miss Violet Deacon and Mrs. Gordon Jarvis. His friends extend congratulation and best wishes.

This house was built in June of 1907 by Walter Deacon,  and was lived in by his daughters,  Annie Deacon, who was a music teacher. and Ada Viola (Violet).

The family consisted of five daughters:

  • Annie (1884- )who married George Airhart

  • Mary Minnie (1887-1900)

  • Violet Ada (1889-1985)

  • Charlotte Myrtle (1896-1959) who married Floyd B. Loveless and Gordon Jarvis (killed in car accident - see below)

  • Olive Deacon (1899-1919)

"For about a week,  men have been engaged in erecting a fence to the west side of McGill Street from the top of the hill near Walter Deacon's south to the band stand in front of C.A Bleecker's office.  Constable Percy Gray is supervising the work."

Died of appendicitis in 1900 aged 12
